The Cycling Group is now called "Cycling for Softies" to distinguish it from groups elsewhere in the Dursley area which are keener on greater distance and speed. The u3a group is targeting members who want to go on rides of between 15 and 30 miles, with a coffee stop in the middle. Members of the group may have one or more reasons for cycling, such as:
- Wanting some gentle exercise
- Having acquired a bike or an eBike they would like to start slowly
- Having been regular cyclists they wish to continue, but want to slow down a bit
- Having been regular cyclists they are recovering from injuries or illness and wish to go on shorter rides initially
- Just want to go on short rides in a social group, on routes that avoid main roads visiting nice countryside
- Enjoying chatting on the quieter lanes and during the stops
We will generally stop at a nice cafe somewhere on the route.
For those interested in longer rides at a faster pace, other groups are available in the area. Please chat with the group leader when you would like to move to a faster paced group.
To maintain fitness, we try to ride once a week. The group is small, which allows flexibility over days that we ride but the default day/time is Tuesday mornings at 10am in the summer. (Winter start times are more variable). The group is centred on Cam and Dursley but spread around the area from Berkeley to Stroud and Eastington to Wotton. We start from various locations in the area and use Whatsapp and email to arrange leaders, dates/times, starting points and routes.
Some members have conventional bikes and some have eBikes.
If you are interested in trying out your bike in a small group, please contact the group leader - Paul Lewington - by clicking on the link at Group leader at the top of the page.
