Crafting Eco-Friendly Christmas Wreaths

Proving that festive décor doesn't have to cost the Earth, our floristry group came together to create stunning, sustainable Christmas wreaths using conscientiously sourced materials from across the country.

Our U3A Sustainable Floristry group capped off the year with a beautiful and festive December meeting! We successfully completed some truly gorgeous Christmas wreaths, transforming our carefully sourced materials into stunning door décor.

This creation was a two-step process: in November, we prepared our bases and wired all the embellishments. Then, at our December session, we finished the wreaths, all while enjoying some delightful Christmas nibbles and mulled apple juice.

The Sustainable Sourcing Challenge

Sourcing sustainable, genuinely British ingredients is often quite the challenge, which is why we’re so proud of our efforts! It’s important to question where your decorations come from—did you know that most of the citrus slices you see are often shipped from Europe, processed in China, and then sent here?

We champion British provenance, and this year, our 'ingredients' travelled from all over the country:

  • Moss and Pine Cones: We sourced these from Evolve Flowers in Lincolnshire, though the materials themselves originated in Norfolk.
  • Eucalyptus: We received a beautiful box of Parvula and Gunnii from Oxney Eucalyptus in Kent. They've been lovingly restoring their old plantation, bringing it back to its former glory.
  • Fir: Our high-quality fir came from J B Turner; we particularly appreciated their perfectly sized cut pieces for easy wreath-making.
  • Local Foliage: We supplemented this with greenery from our gardens including beautiful variegated holly (complete with berries!).

A Spot of DIY!

Rather than relying on imported slices, I had a go at dehydrating my own citrus—though I'll admit, vacuum packing wasn't the best idea! They seem to be holding up, though, and it’s a great example of our commitment to sustainability.

Finishing Touches

For those who crafted a wreath last year, we reused the same ring, embracing our 'make do and mend' philosophy. We also raided the spice cupboard, stringing chillies and star anise, and finished off the designs with elegant jute ribbons.

In this second session, seeing the greenery and embellishments come together was fantastic. Every single wreath is beautiful and wonderfully unique. We're sure there will be some lovely looking doors all over the locality!

What a fittingly creative and joyful end to a year of sustainable floristry!
